Lomi Receives Gold Standard for Sustainable Food Waste Solution

A Kelowna company, Lomi, has been recognized by one of the world’s top sustainability organizations, the Gold Standard Technical Advisory Committee, for its innovative approach to reducing food waste and methane emissions. The committee has approved Lomi’s new project aimed at processing organic waste on site to combat greenhouse gas emissions from landfills.

Lomi is the creator of the world’s first smart waste food recycler, designed to help individuals and municipalities process food scraps locally and prevent them from being sent to landfills. This approach not only reduces methane emissions but also leads to verified emissions reductions, according to the Gold Standard.

Gold Standard, a non-profit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, focuses on promoting ambitious climate action through rigorous standards and verified impacts. The approval of Lomi’s emission reductions means that they can now be traded on carbon markets, allowing buyers to support the project directly.

Jeremy Lang, co-founder and head of sustainability and regeneration at Lomi, emphasized the significance of receiving Gold Standard approval: “Lomi demonstrates leadership in the global effort to reduce carbon emissions. The approval signifies the meaningful impact that the Lomi system can have in terms of reducing carbon emissions in our communities.”

Lomi’s impact is already substantial, with their units present in over 200,000 households worldwide. Through these devices, the Lomi community has diverted an impressive 300 million pounds of food waste from landfills and saved up to 34,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.

This recognition as a Gold Standard sustainable solution marks a significant milestone for Lomi and positions them as a leader in the fight against food waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
