Stone Temple Pilots & Live Announce ‘Purple’ & ‘Throwing Copper’ Joint 30th Anniversary Tour

When you look at the alternative rock boom of the ’90s, 1994 was probably the peak year. Just about anything that sounded like stadium grunge could sell one kajillion copies that year and plenty of those huge albums are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. Today, we learn that the bands behind two of 1994’s biggest alt-rock albums are getting together for a joint tour. Those two bands don’t look much like the ones that actually recorded those albums, but if you just want to sing along to the classics, you’ll get your chance.

Stone Temple Pilots released their sophomore album Purple in June of 1994, while Live came out with their breakout third LP Throwing Copper in April. Both records were humungous. Purple sold six million copies in the US alone, while Throwing Copper sold eight. Today, the two bands have announced a joint 30th-anniversary tour, with fellow ’90s alt-rockers Soul Asylum along for the ride. (Our Lady Peace will stand in for Soul Asylum at a couple of shows.)

On this tour, Live and Stone Temple Pilots will take turns playing last. Original STP frontman Scott Weiland died of an overdose in 2015, and his replacement Chester Bennington, also of Linkin Park, died by suicide in 2017, so this is the version of STP with former X Factor competitor Jeff Gutt, who joined up in 2017. In the case of Live, the band’s frontman is the only classic-era member. Live leader Ed Kowalczyk left the band in 2009 and returned in 2017. Since then, the two remaining original members have been kicked out of the band, so now it’s Kowalczyk and three people who have all joined up since 2016. Messy! But that’s still one night when you get to hear “Interstate Love Song,” “Lighting Crashes,” “Vasoline,” “I Alone,” “Big Empty,” and “Selling The Drama,” so you can decide for yourself if it’s worth it. Check out the dates below.

Kate Middleton’s ‘possible absence’ from King Charles’ official birthday

King Charles actual birthday is 14th November

Kate Middleton, the beloved daughter-in-law, may be absent from a significant event of King Charles scheduled to take place in London on Saturday, June 15.

Nevertheless, Charles is determined to participate in this year’s Trooping the Colour, his official birthday celebration, provided his health allows it.

Aides are already considering options for Charles to partake while accommodating his ongoing cancer treatment. One possibility is for him to observe the military spectacle from a podium instead of riding on horseback, similar to how his late mother used to arrive at Buckingham Palace in a carriage.

A final decision will not be made until closer to the event, taking into account His Majesty’s health condition and medical advice.

King Charles actual birthday is 14th November. The Sovereign’s official birthday is marked by the ceremony of Trooping the Colour, which this year falls on Saturday 15th June 2024.

There are a number of key events His Majesty would love to attend coming up in the diary and this is at the top of the list,’ a source said.

There has been no official confirmation of whether or not the Princess of Wales will be well enough to attend. She had been due not only to attend the ceremony but also to conduct her own review of troops on June 8 in her role as Honorary Colonel of the Irish Guards whose ‘color’ – or regimental flag – is being presented to the King.

A spokesman said only that they would announce when Kate would return to work following her lengthy recuperation from abdominal surgery in January.

At the moment the princess is still expected to return to public duties after the Easter holidays, mostly likely following her children’s return to school in mid-April, dependent on medical advice at the time.

Royal aides have always said that it will be up to the princess if she wishes to make public more details about her health, which she may do in the context of a public engagement.

Sources say that there is no pressure or hurry on her to do so and her focus remains on ‘what is important’ – her recovery and her three children.

Rhule Addresses Alberts’ Exit, Huskers Gear Up for Spring Training

0

Second year head coach Matt Rhule and the Huskers broke down spring ball, but not before Matt Rhule delivered a state of the union style sermon after Alberts’ departure.

LINCOLN, NEB. – With a lot going on in Husker athletics, things are about to ramp up for Husker football with spring practice on the horizon.

Second year head coach Matt Rhule and the Huskers broke it all down, but not before Matt Rhule delivered a state of the union style sermon on the state of the university, the state of Husker athletics, and the goodness things like women’s sports are doing – all less than a week after Trev Alberts departed from Nebraska to become athletic director at Texas A&M.

“From everything I see in our athletic department, this is a well run athletic department,” Rhule said. “I know he [Alberts] has let me do the things that I think are necessary. He’s left the place better then he found it and I think it’s a tremendous opportunity for us to move forward.”

Alberts departs from Nebraska after just under three years at the university. In that time frame, he hired Matt Rhule, transitioned Nebraksa into the NIL era, and was influential in Volleyball Day in Nebraska setting the attendance record for a women’s sporting event.

Rhule made it clear his plan is to stay right where he’s at.

“I am here and I am all in,” Rhule said. “Yes, I loved Ted Carter, and yes I loved Trev, but I came to be at the University of Nebraska. I have loved the people we’ve met and we’re not going anywhere.”

Now, the Huskers turn their attention to spring practice – one player returning to action after a season riddled by several injuries is defensive back Maruques Buford Jr.

“I would say a lot of confidence has been gained from this winter into the spring,” Buford said. “A lot fo guys have gotten way faster way stronger, including myself. Just can’t wait to start getting into actual football.”

A newcomer to the program would be Wake Forest transfer Jahmal Banks.  The 6’4” wideout hauled in four touchdowns for over 650 yards last season with the Demon Deacons and says a talented coaching staff brought him to Nebraska.

“NFL coaching staff is huge,” Banks said. “Also weight room, coordinators, head coach… Just knowing what it takes to get to that next level.”

And of course, the quarterback spot.

“They’ve done a great job, you can see a fire and competitiveness in Dylan [Raiola], he’s chomping at the bit, he’s in there at six o’clock in the morning throwing balls before he lifts at 10,” Rhule said. “Danny [Kaelin] comes in, he’s working on football. They’re both winners.”

Nebraska will hold its Pro Day on Wednesday morning at Hawks Championship Center.

Game Preview: Memphis Grizzlies vs Sacramento Kings

0

With only 14 games remaining, Memphis takes their last West coast road trip of the season.

  • When: Monday, March 18th, 9:00 CST.
  • Where: Golden 1 Center, Sacramento, CA.
  • How to Stream/Watch: Bally Sports Southeast.

Memphis is starting their last four-game road trip of the season as they take on the Sacramento Kings. Memphis is coming off a competitive 118-112 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. This brought Memphis to a 23-45 record.

Sacramento’s last game was a 98-91 loss at home to the New York Knicks. This brought their record to 38-28 record as they sit sixth in the Western Conference.

Despite Memphis’ loss, the biggest storyline of the game was the return of Desmond Bane after missing 29 games due to a left ankle injury. This was a welcome site to see as Bane returned to the lineup and didn’t seem to miss a step at all.

He was making threes, facilitating the ball, and working downhill like the Desmond Bane we all know and love. Expect more of that in this game as he tries to continue his All-Star-level play. He was able to get quality minutes with players such as Jaren Jackson Jr. and GG Jackson II which will come into play with key matchups in tonight’s game.

Sacramento will present a high-powered offense led by De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, and Damantis Sabonis. The last time these two teams played was on New Year’s Eve of last year as Sacramento blew out Memphis 123-92 in Memphis.

In that game, Sacramento’s trio combined for 64 points as Fox and Monk scored 24 and 27 points respectively as Sabonis filled the stat sheet up with a 13 PTS, 21 RBS, and 12 ASTS triple-double.

Sacramento is eighth in the league in points per game and fourth in three-pointers made per game, so the Grizzlies will have to clamp down defensively while keeping up with the Kings in the scoring column. With Bane back in the lineup I see Memphis having a new level of offensive firepower. This should be a highly competitive and high-scoring affair.

The team that can make the most timely defensive stops will come out on top in this game.

Projected Starting Lineups:
Memphis: John Konchar, Desmond Bane, GG Jackson II, Jaren Jackson Jr., Santi Aldama.
Sacramento: De’Aaron Fox, Keegan Murray, Kevin Huerter, Harrison Barnes, and Domantas Sabonis.

Injury Report:
Memphis –
OUT: Ja Morant, Brandon Clarke, Marcus Smart, Luke Kennard, Scotty Pippen Jr., Derrick Rose, Lamar Stevens, Yuta Watanabe, Zaire Williams
DOUBTFUL: Vince Williams Jr.
Sacramento: –
OUT: Trey Lyles, Sasha Vezenkov

Tim Tszyu’s Las Vegas Debut Faces Hurdle as Keith Thurman Bows Out Due to Injury

0

Australian boxer Tim Tszyu’s second chance at a Las Vegas debut has been thrown into turmoil.

Tszyu’s American opponent Keith Thurman has suffered a biceps injury while training and withdrawn from the March 31 (AEDT) bout.

It was January 2023 when Tszyu’s much-hyped Vegas debut was cancelled when division champion Jermell Charlo broke a hand in training.

Tszyu has since assumed the WBO title and beaten Tony Harrison, Carlos Ocampo, and Brian Mendoza all in convincing fashion to maintain his unbeaten record from 24 fights.

Reports out of the US claim Tszyu will now fight Sebastian Fundora on March 31 instead.

It’s yet to be confirmed whether that fight will be for Tszyu’s belt.

Fundora, 26, boasts a 20-1-1 record and held the WBC interim light middleweight title for a few months before losing it last year.

Fundora is known as “The Towering Inferno” and stands at a daunting 197 centimeters tall. Tszyu is 175cm.

Tszyu’s Australian promoters No Limit Boxing confirmed the Thurman news in an email to Wide World of Sports, but say Fundora is not yet locked in.

“Please be advised that Keith Thurman is out of the fight against Tim Tszyu,” the email read.

“A replacement is being sought with Sebastian Fundora the front runner to replace Thurman, but the deal is not done yet.”

No Limit’s George Rose will front the media on Tuesday to provide an update on the card.

If a new opponent can’t be found for Tszyu, the Aussie’s second shot at Vegas stardom will be called off.

While considered one of – if not the – best junior middleweights on the planet, Tszyu has only fought outside Australia once.

That was a unanimous decision win over Terrell Gausha in Minneapolis in March 2022.

Al Horford Ruled Out for Monday Due to Toe Injury

0

Al Horford will be sidelined for Monday’s matchup with the Detroit Pistons due to a toe injury, as reported by Taylor Snow via Twitter.

Fantasy Insight:

Due to a toe ailment, the seasoned center will be absent from the court for Monday’s game. This isn’t the initial instance of Horford missing action this season due to the injury, though it’s noted to be sporadic and not deemed severe. In Horford’s absence, Luke Kornet is expected to see an increase in minutes.

Tanzid 84, Rishad blitz seal series for Bangladesh

0

Taskin took three wickets to restrict Sri Lanka to 235 before the batters navigated a tricky chase.

Taskin Ahmed’s pivotal three-wicket haul effectively contained Sri Lanka to a total of 235, setting the stage for a challenging pursuit by the Bangladesh batsmen.

In a display of rapid scoring, Tanzid Hasan and Rishad Hossain propelled Bangladesh through a turbulent middle phase to secure a four-wicket victory over Sri Lanka. This win handed Bangladesh the ODI series with a 2-1 lead, despite the setback of three players sustaining injuries in the concluding overs of the first innings at Chattogram. Tanzid, stepping in as a concussion replacement for Soumya Sarkar, notched up a personal best of 84, setting the scene for Rishad’s explosive performance. Unleashing his fury, Rishad blasted four sixes and five fours to amass an electrifying 48 not out off just 18 balls.

Entering the fray with Bangladesh needing 58 more runs in 13.5 overs, Rishad kick-started his onslaught with a six from the very first ball faced off Wanindu Hasaranga, followed by a four and another six in the same over. His aggression didn’t stop there; he hit two additional sixes off Hasaranga in the 40th over, costing Sri Lanka 24 runs. Overall, Rishad extracted 40 runs from Hasaranga in merely 11 balls.

Despite Sri Lanka’s struggle to post a significant total in the crucial match, Janith Liyanage’s inaugural ODI century propelled them beyond the 200-run threshold. Liyanage’s unbeaten 101 from 102 deliveries, adorned with eleven fours and two sixes, was a silver lining even as Bangladesh’s injury woes mounted towards the innings’ end.

The injury list included Mustafizur Rahman, who experienced cramps in the 48th over, and Soumya Sarkar, who suffered neck and knee injuries after a collision with the boundary advertising boards. The series of injuries culminated in the last over when substitute fielder Jaker Ali and Anamul Haque collided, leading to Jaker’s hospitalization due to a concussion.

The match also tested the endurance of non-players, with umpire Tanvir Ahmed stepping in for Richard Kettleborough, who was sidelined by illness due to the heat.

Bangladesh’s innings began on a steadying note with openers Anamul and Tanzid forging a fifty-run partnership.

However, Anamul was the first to fall prey to Kumara, lofting a drive to cover after scoring 12. The Bangladesh skipper, Najmul Hossain Shanto, was next, nicking Kumara to the keeper for a mere single.

Tanzid, on the other hand, batted with poise, directing six of his nine boundaries through cover and mid-off. He skillfully navigated the fast short deliveries, scoring off them with finesse slightly fine of the square-leg and through midwicket. Showing particular aggression towards Kumara, Tanzid slashed a six, plundering 30 runs off 19 balls from the fast bowler, highlighting a composed yet assertive batting display amidst the chase.
