The Global Expansion of Football Since American Bowl ’94

New York Giants und die Internationalisierung des American Football: Eine Erfolgsgeschichte

New York Giants Making Strides in International Markets

The New York Giants have a long and storied history in the NFL, but their reach is now extending beyond the borders of the United States. With the recent announcement that the Giants have obtained international marketing rights in Germany, the team is making strides in connecting with fans around the world.

The Giants’ journey to international markets began back in 1994 when they traveled to Berlin for a preseason game against the San Diego Chargers. The game took place at the same venue where Jesse Owens won his Olympic gold medal, adding a special significance to the event.

Howard Cross, a former Giants player who was a part of that historic game, remembers the excitement of the fans in Germany. “The atmosphere was electric, just like you see in London or other cities today,” Cross recalls. “People were thrilled to experience American football up close and personal. It was a moment that really gave them a kick.”

Since that memorable game in 1994, the Giants have continued to make an impact on the international stage. In 2007, they played in the first regular-season NFL game outside of North America, taking on the Miami Dolphins at London’s Wembley Stadium. The Giants emerged victorious, setting the stage for future international success.

The Giants’ participation in the NFL’s International Series has not only expanded their fan base but also solidified their presence in global markets. With the launch of the Global Markets Program in 2022, the Giants are poised to engage with fans on an even larger scale.

Former Giants player Osi Umenyiora, now a leading NFL ambassador for NFL Africa, emphasizes the importance of global talent in the league. “The NFL is changing lives, and the opportunities to play this sport are now truly global,” Umenyiora says. “International football development programs are making a difference in the lives of young people and promoting the sport worldwide.”

As the NFL looks to increase the number of international athletes in the league, the Giants are at the forefront of this movement. With the upcoming NFL International Games in 2024, including the first game in South America, the league is continuing its mission to promote American football on a global scale.

Cross reflects on the evolving nature of the sport and its impact on young fans worldwide. “American football, once considered a sport with limited international appeal, is now widely spread across the globe,” Cross states. “Kids are now realizing that they have a chance to play this sport and are taking it seriously. The sport is growing, and the opportunities for young athletes are expanding.”

With the Giants leading the way in international markets and promoting the growth of American football worldwide, the future looks bright for the team and its global fan base.
