Efforts to control AI’s behind-the-scenes influence on Americans stall in state legislatures in the US | WGN Radio 720

Challenges Facing Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Programs in Statehouses

COLORADO PASSES BILL TO REGULATE AI DISCRIMINATION IN DECISION-MAKING

In a groundbreaking move, Colorado has become the first state to pass a bill aimed at regulating artificial intelligence programs that have been found to discriminate in hiring, housing, and medical decisions. The bill, signed by Governor Jared Polis, has sparked a heated debate between civil rights groups, the tech industry, and lawmakers.

The new law requires companies to assess the risk of discrimination from their AI systems and inform customers when AI was used to make consequential decisions for them. This comes after alarming cases of bias in AI decision-making, such as Amazon’s hiring algorithm that downgraded resumes with the word “women’s” or that listed women’s colleges.

Studies have shown that AI systems can disproportionately impact minority groups, with one lawsuit alleging that an AI system scoring rental applications assigned lower scores to Black or Hispanic applicants. With AI playing a significant role in decision-making processes, there is growing concern about the lack of transparency and accountability in these systems.

While larger AI companies have accepted the need for regulation, smaller startups are expressing concerns about the impact of such laws on innovation. However, proponents of the bill argue that transparency and oversight are crucial in addressing algorithmic discrimination.

As the debate continues, experts are calling for more rigorous measures to ensure accountability in AI systems. With AI becoming increasingly integrated into society, the need for regulation to prevent discrimination and bias is more urgent than ever.
