Eddie Murphy responds to David Spade’s controversial 1995 ‘SNL’ joke accused of being racist

Eddie Murphy Recalls Racist Joke by David Spade on Saturday Night Live

Eddie Murphy recently opened up about a hurtful and racist joke made by former Saturday Night Live cast member David Spade during a sketch in 1995. The comedian recalled the incident during an interview on The New York Times Magazine’s “The Interview” podcast, where he expressed how the joke made him feel.

Spade’s comment, which was part of his “Hollywood Minute” sketch, showed a photo of Murphy with the caption, “Look children, it’s a falling star. Make a wish.” Murphy, who starred in the film “Vampire in Brooklyn” at the time, described the joke as a “cheap shot” and felt that it was racist.

Despite the initial hurtful incident, Murphy insists that he has nothing but love for his fellow SNL cast members, including Spade. He also reflected on facing negative press and racist comments during his rise to fame in the 1980s.

The actor, known for iconic roles in films like “Coming to America” and “Beverly Hills Cop,” has since made amends with Spade and other SNL colleagues. He even returned to host the show in 2019 and made an appearance at its 40th-anniversary celebration in 2015.

Overall, Murphy expressed that he has moved past the negativity and is focused on spreading love and positivity in the entertainment industry.
