Photos and Details of the B-21 Raider’s Flight Testing and Features

The U.S. military has released stunning photos of the B-21 Raider in flight, signaling that the futuristic warplane is moving closer to becoming the nation’s next nuclear stealth bomber. The B-21 Raider recently began flight testing at Edwards Air Force Base in California, with one photograph showing the bomber soaring above the clouds and another image capturing the aircraft just above the runway.

According to the Air Force, the B-21 Raider is making significant progress towards becoming the backbone of the U.S. Air Force bomber fleet. The military plans to build 100 of these warplanes, which feature a flying wing shape similar to their predecessor, the B-2 Spirit, but incorporate advanced materials, propulsion, and stealth technology to enhance survivability in future conflicts. The plane is also slated to be produced in variants with and without pilots.

“We are in the flight test program, and it’s proceeding well,” stated Andrew Hunter, the assistant secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics. The B-21 Raider represents the first new American bomber aircraft in over three decades, with much of the program’s details kept classified to prevent adversaries like China from obtaining valuable technology.

At its unveiling in December 2022, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin highlighted the unmatched range and stealth capabilities of the B-21 Raider. He emphasized that the aircraft’s advanced low-observable technology would make it difficult for even the most sophisticated air-defense systems to detect it in the sky.
