“Join WHO in Observing International Snakebite Awareness Day 2024 (ISBAD ’24)”
International Snakebite Awareness Day 2024 (ISBAD ’24) is set to be observed on March 19th, with the World Health Organization (WHO) leading efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of snakebites and the importance of timely treatment.
Snakebites are a major public health concern in many parts of the world, especially in rural areas where access to medical care may be limited. According to the WHO, an estimated 5.4 million people are bitten by snakes each year, resulting in up to 2.7 million cases of envenoming and over 100,000 deaths.
The theme for this year’s ISBAD ’24 is “Act Fast, Save Lives”, highlighting the need for quick action in the event of a snakebite. The WHO is urging communities to educate themselves on how to prevent snakebites, recognize the signs of envenoming, and seek immediate medical attention.
In addition to raising awareness, the WHO is also working to improve access to antivenoms and other essential treatments for snakebites. They are calling on governments, healthcare providers, and the public to prioritize snakebite prevention and treatment, particularly in high-risk areas.
As part of ISBAD ’24, the WHO will be hosting events and campaigns around the world to spread the message about the importance of snakebite awareness and encourage action to reduce the impact of snakebites on communities.
So, on March 19th, let’s all take a moment to learn more about snakebites, how to prevent them, and what to do in case of an emergency. Together, we can help save lives and make a difference in the fight against snakebites.
