Legendary Triple Jumper Christian Taylor Retires from International Athletics
Christian Taylor, the legendary triple jumper, announced his retirement from international athletics after competing at the Holloway Pro Classic in Gainesville on Friday. The 34-year-old US athlete has had an illustrious career, winning double Olympic gold medals and four world championships in the triple jump.
Taylor is considered one of the greatest triple jumpers in history, with seven global titles to his name and a personal best jump of 18.21m, the second-best of all time. His ability to excel on the big stage was evident from the start of his career, when he won gold at the 2007 World U18 Championships in Ostrava.
Throughout his career, Taylor showcased his versatility by competing in both the triple jump and long jump, and even winning gold in the 4x400m at the World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz. His breakthrough came at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, where he won the triple jump title with a jump of 17.96m.
Taylor continued to dominate the triple jump event, winning numerous titles and breaking the 18-meter barrier in 2015. His rivalry with Pedro Pichardo provided thrilling competitions, with Taylor ultimately coming out on top and clinching his fourth world title in Doha in 2019.
Despite persistent achilles issues that sidelined him during the 2021 season and prevented him from defending his Olympic title in Tokyo, Taylor made his final appearance at the 2022 World Championships as a defending champion.
Reflecting on his career, Taylor expressed gratitude for the journey and the opportunities he had in the sport. “I just strive to be the best athlete I can be,” he said after his final performance in Gainesville. “I just want to be a good person and a good role model. I couldn’t have asked for a better career or a better journey.”
Christian Taylor’s retirement marks the end of an era in triple jump athletics, but his legacy as a champion and role model will endure for years to come.
