Gunmen kill three Spanish citizens and three Afghans in central Afghanistan
In a tragic incident in central Afghanistan, three Spanish citizens and three Afghans were killed when gunmen opened fire on Friday evening. The attack took place in Bamiyan province, a popular tourist area known for its stunning landscapes and historical sites.
Officials initially reported four fatalities, but the death toll was later confirmed to be six. Seven suspects were arrested at the scene, and an investigation is currently underway. Seven other individuals were wounded in the attack and have been transferred to Kabul for medical treatment.
The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the deaths of three Spaniards in the incident, with one more individual from Spain being injured. According to a Taliban official, the four wounded foreigners included individuals from Norway, Australia, and Latvia.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his shock and grief over the tragic event on social media. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan also offered condolences to the victims and is providing assistance following the attack.
While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, suspicion is likely to fall on the Islamic State group’s affiliate in Afghanistan, a major rival of the Taliban. The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021 as US and NATO forces completed their withdrawal from the country after two decades of war.
Bamiyan is best known for the massive Buddha statues that were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. The region has been working to rebuild and attract tourists, with the number of visitors increasing significantly in recent years.
The tragic shooting underscores the ongoing challenges and threats faced by civilians in Afghanistan, as the country continues to grapple with instability and violence. Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones during this difficult time.
