Sports Representation Firm Rimas Sports Sues MLB Players’ Association for Restraining Order
The sports representation firm Rimas Sports, under its corporate name Diamond Sports LLC, has filed a lawsuit against the Major League Baseball Players Association, claiming that the union is interfering with its ability to represent players. The lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in San Juan, Puerto Rico, accuses the union of violating Puerto Rico’s general tort claim and tortious interference laws.
One of the firm’s key complaints is that the union’s actions prevented it from taking on NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. as a client and negotiating a long-term contract for New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez. Despite the union’s actions, Rimas Sports announced that it had signed a representation agreement with Acuña, although the union stated that the Atlanta star did not have a listed agent.
The union had previously issued a notice of discipline to Rimas agents William Arroyo, Noah Assad, and Jonathan Miranda, fining them $400,000 for misconduct. Arroyo, who was a certified agent for the union, represented Alvarez and teammate Ronny Mauricio. The union decertified Arroyo and informed Assad and Miranda that they could not apply for certification.
Rimas Sports was founded in 2021 with a focus on representing Latin players and currently has 68 clients, including 14 major leaguers. The firm alleges that the union’s actions were discriminatory and designed to put Rimas Sports out of business.
The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the union. The MLB Players Association declined to comment on the matter.
