Global Outrage Over Attempted Assassination of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico
World leaders around the globe have expressed shock and condemnation following the assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is currently in a ‘life-threatening condition’ after being shot multiple times.
The attack, which took place in the central town of Handlova, has been described as an ‘assassination attempt’ by local authorities. A suspect has been detained, and the scene has been sealed off by the police.
United States President Joe Biden was among the first to respond, calling the shooting a ‘horrific act of violence’ and expressing his prayers for Fico’s swift recovery. Russian President Vladimir Putin labeled the attack as a ‘monstrous crime’ and wished Fico a speedy and full recovery.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the attack as a ‘vile act’ that has no place in society, while French President Emmanuel Macron expressed shock and solidarity with Fico and the people of Slovakia.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz denounced the attack as ‘cowardly’ and stressed the importance of non-violence in European politics. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also condemned the attack and wished Fico a quick recovery.
Other global leaders, including the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, all expressed shock and condemnation of the assassination attempt.
