Serena Williams Hosts 2024 ESPY Awards, Jokes About Taylor Swift’s Boyfriend

Tennis star Serena Williams brought the house down as she hosted the 2024 ESPY Awards on Thursday, July 11. The event, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, saw Williams delivering a hilarious opening monologue filled with witty jokes and playful jabs.

During her monologue, Williams couldn’t resist poking fun at Travis Kelce’s relationship with Taylor Swift. The 42-year-old athlete congratulated the Kansas City Chiefs, jokingly referring to Kelce as “Taylor Swift’s boyfriend” after the couple’s public romance made headlines last fall.

Williams humorously quipped, “Travis and Taylor reportedly spent $100,000 a day on their romance. That’s a lot of money. That’s what I’ve been told Jaylen Brown spends on his beard. It’s very shiny. I like it though.”

The tennis champion didn’t stop there. She also teased about LeBron James’ son, Bronny James, getting drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers, making them the first father-son duo to play for the same NBA team. The crowd erupted in laughter as Williams comically mentioned Bronny’s hairline receding like his dad’s and magically un-receding.

Amidst the jokes, Williams took a moment to celebrate her own successes, including the Oscar-winning film about her life, “King Richard”, where Will Smith portrayed her father. She humorously referenced Smith’s infamous slap of comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars, jokingly advising Smith to “come out of character.”

Not stopping at sports, Williams also gave a shoutout to her friends Meghan Markle and Prince Harry for attending the awards show, showing her support for the royal couple.

Before the show, Williams walked the red carpet with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, and their daughters Olympia and Adira. The couple tied the knot in 2017 and welcomed their daughters in 2017 and 2023.

Reflecting on her retirement from tennis in 2022, Williams expressed her uncertainty about the future but acknowledged missing the sport more than expected. Her new ventures include a venture-capital fund and a makeup line, but her love for tennis remains strong.

Williams’s hosting gig at the ESPY Awards showcased not only her comedic talent but also her grace and charm, proving once again why she remains a beloved figure in sports and entertainment.
