Scotland emerge victorious in World Schools Debating Championships

Scotland Wins Fifth World School Debating Championships Title

Scotland emerged victorious at the World School Debating Championships in Serbia, securing their fifth title in the competition’s history. The team, comprising students from four schools, triumphed over tough opponents like New Zealand, Pakistan, England, and Qatar to face Bulgaria in the final.

Their impressive win in Belgrade not only secured their fifth title but also placed them on par with England as the second most successful team in the tournament’s history, just behind nine-time champions Australia.

The squad, made up of talented debaters from Dollar Academy, Portobello High School, Broxburn Academy, and St Columba’s in Kilmacolm, showcased their skills in a grand final match against Bulgaria, emerging victorious with a resounding 7-2 score on the motion: “This house regrets the glorification of champions.”

First Minister John Swinney extended his “warmest congratulations” to the pupils for their outstanding achievement. The team’s hard work and dedication paid off, with team member Callum expressing disbelief at being crowned a world champion, having trained for five hours a week while managing his school workload.

Reflecting on their journey to victory, Sophie highlighted the challenges faced during the competition but emphasized their growing strength and unity as they progressed through each round. Meanwhile, Logan humorously acknowledged the irony of debating against the glorification of champions while being interviewed by the BBC with their trophy in hand.

The team’s success garnered praise from various politicians and public figures, with Mr. Swinney and Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross congratulating Team Scotland on their remarkable victory. The win marks a historic moment for Scotland in the prestigious debating competition, reaffirming their prowess on the global stage.
