“Serial killer responsible for 1970s Alberta murders identified after nearly 50 years”
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have identified Gary Allen Srery, a man who died in a US prison in 2011 while serving a sentence for rape, as a serial killer responsible for the murders of four women in Alberta in the 1970s. The victims, Eva Dvorak, Patricia “Patsy” McQueen, Melissa Rehorek, and Barbara MacLean, all disappeared between 1976 and 1977 in Calgary. Despite extensive investigations at the time, their cases remained unsolved for almost 50 years.
Through advanced DNA technology, investigators were able to identify Srery as the suspect, a US citizen who was in Canada illegally at the time. Srery had an extensive criminal record in the US for sex offenses, including rape and kidnapping. He had lived under multiple aliases and evaded law enforcement until he was convicted of sexual assault in 1998 and deported back to the US, where he was imprisoned for life.
The RCMP is now seeking the public’s help in piecing together Srery’s life in Canada, as they suspect he may be responsible for more unsolved crimes in western Canada. Superintendent David Hall expressed hope that the families of the victims can finally have some closure after learning the truth about what happened to their loved ones decades ago.
