Pittsburgh International Airport has recently reported its busiest month in 19 years, with over 970,000 passengers traveling through the airport in June. This significant increase in passenger traffic is attributed to record nationwide air travel and continued strong demand in the region.

The airport officials noted that June marked the highest monthly travel in and out of the airport since July 2005, highlighting the growing popularity of air travel in the area. Additionally, June also saw the largest monthly increase over pre-pandemic traffic levels, with nearly 70,000 additional passengers compared to the same period in 2019.

Airlines scheduled more than 1.2 million seats at PIT in June, the most of any month since May 2007. This surge in airline capacity reflects the rising demand for air travel and the airport’s efforts to accommodate the growing number of passengers.

Pittsburgh International Airport CEO, Christina Cassotis, expressed optimism about the airport’s future growth, stating that they have already surpassed their forecasted passenger levels for the year. She emphasized the airport’s transition from a connecting hub to an origin-and-destination airport, with over 95% of passengers now starting and ending their trips in Pittsburgh.

With a diverse airline mix that includes low-cost carriers, ultra-low-cost carriers, foreign flag carriers, and legacy carriers, PIT continues to attract a wide range of travelers. The airport’s new terminal, set to open next year, aims to enhance the passenger experience and further establish PIT as a leading hub for air travel.

As the airport continues to expand its network and add new routes, such as the upcoming daily, nonstop service to Salt Lake City by Delta Air Lines, PIT remains on track for continued growth and success in the aviation industry.
