Memorial Day Tribute: “Field of Flags” Honors Wisconsin Fallen Heroes
Milwaukee Veterans Park Honors Fallen Heroes with Field of Flags
Milwaukee, Wisconsin – The somber yet striking sight of over 27,000 American flags now graces the landscape of Milwaukee’s Veterans Park, creating a poignant tribute to every Wisconsin resident who has made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.
Volunteers gathered at the park on Friday morning to plant the final flag in the sprawling “Field of Flags” display, which stretches across the park just north of the city’s War Memorial Center along Lake Michigan. Each flag represents a fallen hero from Wisconsin who gave their life for the cause of freedom, dating back to the Civil War.
Dan Buttery, president and CEO of the War Memorial Center, expressed the deep significance of the display, stating, “Behind each flag is a fallen hero from Wisconsin and the thousands of families and loved ones who carry on their legacy.” The Field of Flags has become an annual Memorial Day tradition in Milwaukee, now in its fifth year.
This year’s tribute features nearly twice the number of flags compared to last year, with a total of 27,316 flags on display. The increase in flags serves as a solemn reminder of the many lives lost in service to the nation, spanning conflicts from the Civil War to present-day conflicts.
The impactful display aims to honor and remember the sacrifices made by Wisconsin residents throughout history, fostering a sense of gratitude and remembrance among all who visit the park. The Field of Flags will stand as a symbol of honor and reverence throughout the Memorial Day weekend, inviting visitors to pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.
