DHS Rolls Out New Technology for Firefighters to See Through Smoke – ABC News

The Department of Homeland Security is rolling out a groundbreaking technology that could revolutionize firefighting operations across the country. The new helmet-mounted indoor visualization and navigation device, developed by Austin-based startup Qwake Technologies in collaboration with the DHS, allows first responders to see through dark smoke, providing crucial visibility in hazardous environments.

Known as C-THRU, the device is equipped with a high-speed thermal camera that captures surroundings in real-time. This hands-free and lightweight technology not only enhances situational awareness for firefighters but also offers navigation assistance in challenging conditions. In the event that a firefighter becomes disoriented or lost in a burning building, the device’s mayday function can be activated to alert nearby C-THRU users for a swift and coordinated rescue operation.

“With improved equipment and technology, we can save lives and better protect our firefighters,” stated Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology. The Department is now accepting applications from fire departments across the country to receive one of the 400 prototype devices available.
