Importance of Cultural Diversity in the U.S. Air Force: A Look at International Airmen’s Experiences
The strength of diversity within the U.S. Air Force is exemplified by the stories of Senior Airman Erika Vega from Colombia, Senior Airman Dennis Nketiah from Ghana, and Airman 1st Class Malakye Vergara from Guatemala at Holloman Air Force Base.
Vega’s journey began when she immigrated to the United States at 19, not knowing the language or customs. Despite facing the loss of her father during training, she persevered and became an emergency management specialist. Vega’s positive outlook and dedication have enabled her to thrive in her Air Force career, where she continues to help others and explore the world.
Nketiah, originally from Ghana, transitioned to the U.S. seeking better opportunities. His pride in serving in the U.S. Air Force as a public health technician reflects his gratitude for the possibilities afforded to him. Nketiah’s commitment to his work and community at Holloman showcases his sense of purpose and loyalty.
Vergara’s path led him from Guatemala to the U.S. in search of a supportive community. His resilience, honed through past challenges, has enabled him to excel as a supply apprentice at Holloman. Engaging with fellow Airmen and actively participating in base activities, Vergara embodies the spirit of connection and growth.
These Airmen’s diverse backgrounds contribute to the strength of Team Holloman, showcasing the beauty of cultural exchange and the collective impact of individual stories within the Air Force. As Vega aptly puts it, “Different backgrounds and different ways to approach problems expand your mind. To learn about your peers’ cultural backgrounds is a beautiful thing.”
