Washington DC – US Congressman Shri Thanedar, representing Michigan district, has introduced a new legislation that could potentially change the landscape for international students studying in the United States. The HR 9023 bill, also known as the Keep STEM Graduates in America Act, aims to provide more opportunities for students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields to remain in the country after completing their studies.

The proposed legislation focuses on reforming the H-1B visa process and increasing the number of available visas each year. Congressman Thanedar emphasized the significant contributions that foreign STEM students have made to innovation and growth in the United States and highlighted the importance of retaining these talented individuals within the country.

Drawing from his own personal experience as an immigrant whose education in the US paved the way for his future opportunities, Thanedar stressed the importance of keeping gifted students in the country. He acknowledged the challenges faced by international students in obtaining H-1B visas post-graduation and proposed revisions to address these issues.

The Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) expressed support for the legislation, recognizing its potential to benefit STEM-educated foreign graduates in America. Khanderao Kand, Chief of Policy and Strategy at FIIDS, commended Congressman Thanedar for his efforts in retaining talented individuals in the US workforce.

Through the Keep STEM Graduates in America Act, Congressman Thanedar aims to provide students with more time to secure employment and contribute to the US economy. By expanding the availability of H-1B visas and simplifying the visa process, the legislation seeks to create a more equitable world while strengthening the American economy.

The introduction of this bill could have far-reaching implications for international students in STEM fields, offering them increased opportunities to thrive and innovate in the United States.
