Charles Sturt University researchers lead global movement to improve mental health research in rural and regional communities
The fight for better mental health research in rural and regional communities has gained global momentum thanks to the efforts of Charles Sturt University researchers. Leading the charge with their new paper, ‘International Declaration of rural mental health research: 10 guiding principles and standards’, the research team aims to bridge the gap in funding for mental health research between metropolitan areas and rural communities.
The launch event, which took place in Utrecht, the Netherlands, brought together researchers and health policymakers from around the world to discuss how best to involve and engage rural communities in research on crucial public health issues. Professor Russell Roberts and Dr. Hazel Dalton spearheaded the international collaboration, drawing on expertise from Australia, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, and more.
Dr. Dalton highlighted the disparity in mental health funding and access between urban and rural areas, stressing the importance of conducting research WITH rural communities, not just ON them. The research paper lays out ten guiding principles for novices, policymakers, and communities to follow, emphasizing the need for ethical and beneficial engagement with local stakeholders.
Attendees at the event praised the tangible nature of the declaration and its potential to aid research, education, and philanthropy in various countries and rural communities. With the paper set to be published in the Australian Journal of Rural Health, the hope is that these guiding principles will lead to more effective and impactful mental health research in underrepresented areas.
The support from organizations like the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health demonstrates the widespread acknowledgment of the importance of improving mental health research in rural and regional communities. Charles Sturt University’s dedication to this cause is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in advancing public health initiatives worldwide.
