Hiker from Aroostook County sets a record on the International Appalachian Trail in Maine

Exploring Maine’s International Appalachian Trail with Robert Greenier

Aroostook County native Robert Greenier has made headlines by completing the 138-mile Maine portion of the International Appalachian Trail in just under 67 hours. As the first male hiker to set a time for this part of the trail, Greenier’s feat will be documented on Fastest Known Time, a website of worldwide hiking records.

Born in Fort Kent and raised near Presque Isle, Greenier, now a Colorado resident, embarked on this challenging journey to draw attention to the International Appalachian Trail and potentially attract more tourists to Aroostook County. Despite being an avid hiker since 2019, Greenier was surprised by the difficulty of this particular hike, which he described as the highest mileage days he’s ever experienced.

Hiking unsupported, Greenier carried two tracking devices to monitor his progress, although one malfunctioned along the way. His dedication to completing the trail for time qualification showcases his commitment to the sport and sets a standard for others to aim for. Greenier hopes that by publicizing his achievement, more hikers will be inspired to explore this scenic and historic route, bringing economic benefits to the northern Maine region.
