Google to Invest $2 Billion in Malaysia for Data Center and Cloud Hub

Google Pledges $2 Billion Investment in Malaysia, Building Data Center and Cloud Region

In a groundbreaking move, Google has announced plans to invest $2 billion in Malaysia, establishing its first data center and Google Cloud hub in the Southeast Asian country. This significant investment comes hot on the heels of Microsoft’s pledge to inject $2.2 billion into Malaysia’s cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure over the next four years.

The announcement was met with enthusiasm from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who described Google’s decision as a vote of confidence in Malaysia’s governance and economy. Anwar predicts that the investment will contribute $3.2 billion to the economy and create 26,500 jobs by 2030, showcasing the positive impact of tech companies’ presence in the country.

This move is particularly significant for Anwar, who is navigating a challenging political landscape against a strong Islamic opposition. The partnership with Google not only underscores Malaysia’s attractiveness to tech giants but also highlights the country’s potential for growth in the technology sector.

Google’s new data center and cloud hub will be located in Selangor state, central Malaysia, catering to the increasing demand for cloud services and artificial intelligence literacy programs for Malaysian students and educators. This development will make Malaysia the 12th country to host a Google data center and will enhance the country’s position as a regional hub for technology and innovation.

Ruth Porat, Alphabet Inc.’s president and chief financial officer, praised Malaysia’s commitment to cybersecurity standards and its “Cloud First Policy.” This partnership between Google and Malaysia aims to bring cutting-edge technology to enterprises, startups, and the public sector, fostering innovation and economic growth in the country.

The investment in Malaysia solidifies Google’s presence in the region and reflects its long-term commitment to supporting the country’s digital transformation. With Malaysia emerging as a key player in the tech industry, this collaboration sets the stage for further advancements in cloud computing and artificial intelligence, benefiting both the country and Google in the years to come.
