Zoo Atlanta to Send Giant Pandas Back to China in 2024
Zoo Atlanta’s Giant Pandas to Return to China, Bringing End to U.S. Panda Presence
In a bittersweet announcement, Zoo Atlanta has confirmed that its beloved giant pandas, Lun Lun, Yang Yang, Ya Lun, and Xi Lun, will soon be embarking on a journey back to their homeland in China. This decision comes as the zoo’s agreement with China for the pandas nears its expiration in 2024.
Preparations are already underway for the pandas’ return, with the international travel permit application in progress. The pandas are expected to make their way to China in the fourth quarter of 2024, although specific details are still being ironed out in collaboration with Chinese officials.
The pandas at Zoo Atlanta are currently the last remaining pandas in the United States, as other zoos across the nation have recently sent their pandas back to China. However, San Francisco is gearing up to welcome a new pair of pandas next year, as announced by Mayor London Breed.
The panda exchange program between China and the U.S. dates back to an agreement brokered in 1972 under then-President Nixon. The pandas were loaned to American zoos for research purposes, fostering a strong bond between the two nations through these gentle “envoys of friendship.”
As the pandas bid farewell to their American home, the zoo and its visitors are sure to cherish the memories and impact these iconic animals have had during their stay. The impending return marks the end of an era for U.S. panda conservation efforts, while also paving the way for continued collaboration and conservation initiatives between the two countries.
