Box Office Battle: Garfield vs Furiosa – Memorial Day Weekend Recap
The battle for the top spot at the North American box office over the long Memorial Day weekend was fierce as The Garfield Movie and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga went head to head. Despite the competition, the overall box office numbers were disappointing, with both films underperforming.
The Garfield Movie, Sony’s animated reboot featuring Chris Pratt as the iconic lasagna-loving cat, was expected to bring in $31.9 million over the four-day weekend. Right on its tail was Furiosa, the latest installment in George Miller’s Mad Max series, starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the titular role. Furiosa raked in $31.5 million, coming in just shy of the top spot.
While Furiosa received praise from both critics and audiences, industry analysts noted that it was a lackluster opening for the franchise compared to its predecessor, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which starred Charlize Theron. The final box office numbers will be released on Tuesday, but it’s clear that neither film lived up to expectations for the holiday weekend.
In third place was Paramount’s animated feature If with $21 million, followed by 20th Century’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes at $17.1 million and Universal’s The Fall Guy at $7.8 million.
Overall, Memorial Day weekend proved to be a tough one at the box office, with both The Garfield Movie and Furiosa failing to impress. Despite the disappointing numbers, moviegoers will have to wait and see how these films fare in the coming weeks.
