Gannett Introduces AI-Generated Summaries in News Articles
US media conglomerate Gannett has recently made strides in incorporating AI technology into its news articles. The company, known for owning numerous newspapers across the United States, has launched a program that includes AI-generated summaries at the top of its articles.
The AI-generated bullet points, named “Key Points,” are designed to provide readers with a quick overview of the article’s content. These bullet points, created using AI technology developed in-house over a nine-month period, are placed below the headline of the news article.
The program has already been implemented on the website of Gannett-owned newspaper, USA Today. A disclaimer at the end of each article clarifies that the Key Points were created with the assistance of AI technology and reviewed by a journalist before publication.
While Gannett’s foray into AI-generated content has had some setbacks in the past, including discontinuing AI sports recaps and facing criticism over awkward writing, the company seems determined to integrate AI technology into its reporting process to enhance audience experience.
The trend of using AI for summarizing news articles reflects broader developments on search platforms like Google and TikTok. Google recently announced plans to integrate AI into search results, including adding AI answers at the top of the page. Similarly, TikTok is experimenting with AI-generated overviews in search results.
Gannett’s move to incorporate AI-generated summaries in its news articles marks a significant step towards leveraging technology to enhance the news reading experience and streamline the reporting process.
