Gabby Douglas’ Olympic Dreams Dashed by Ankle Injury

Gabby Douglas Injury and Comeback: What’s Next for the American Gymnast

Gabby Douglas, the gymnastics legend, made a valiant comeback in 2024 with hopes of becoming the oldest American gymnast to qualify for the event since 1952. However, her dreams were cut short when she announced her withdrawal from the 2024 U.S. Championships due to an ankle injury sustained during training.

“I love this sport and I love pushing my limits,” Douglas shared with ESPN. “I hope I can inspire both my peers and the next generation of gymnasts that age is just a number, and you can accomplish anything you work hard for.”

Douglas had been making a comeback by competing at the American Classic and U.S. Classic, but had to withdraw from the latter event after struggling during her uneven bars routine. Her withdrawal reduced the number of gymnasts competing at the U.S. Championships from 42 to 41.

The ankle injury was cited as the reason for her withdrawal, and although details were not provided, it was clear that any type of injury would have hindered her chances of recovering in time for the U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials in late June. Therefore, Douglas made the decision to prioritize her health and recovery over pushing through for an improbable Olympic bid.

Having competed in the Olympics twice in 2012 and 2016, winning a total of three gold medals, Douglas has a decorated history in the sport. At 28 years old, she would have been the oldest American gymnast since 1952 to compete, but her focus now shifts to the 2028 Olympics.

“I proved to myself and to the sport that my skills remain at an elite level,” Douglas shared. “My plan is to continue to train for the L.A. 2028 Olympics. It would be such an honor to represent the U.S. at a home Olympics.”

Douglas faces an uphill battle to qualify for the 2028 Olympics at the age of 32, but with determination and dedication, she may have a chance to make her mark once again on the Olympic stage. Only time will tell how her comeback journey unfolds.
