Gabby Douglas’ Missing Olympic Gold Medals
Gabby Douglas, the first Black gymnast to win an Olympic all-around gymnastics title, recently revealed that she has no idea where her three gold medals are located. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Douglas admitted that she believes her mother may have the medals, but she is not certain. Despite not displaying them, she trusts that they are in a safe place.
Douglas made history at the 2012 Summer Games in London, winning individual and team gold medals. She returned for the 2016 Rio Games, where the U.S. women’s gymnastics team once again won gold in the group competition. Although Douglas did not place in the all-around competition, her teammates Simone Biles and Aly Raisman secured gold and silver medals, respectively.
The gymnast explained that she keeps her medals in a box because they are fragile and can fray due to oils on hands. After skipping the 2020 Tokyo Games, Douglas aimed to make the 2024 Olympics team but withdrew her bid due to an ankle injury sustained during the U.S. gymnastics championships in Texas.
Douglas shared her Olympic journey, emphasizing the challenges of making the team and the excitement of representing the USA once selected. She also discussed her recent partnership with Ancestry to explore how gymnastics runs in her blood. Through this collaboration, she discovered that gymnastics traits have been present in her family for generations.
Users can compare their genetic traits with other Olympians on Ancestry.com/BringYourDNAGame. Despite the uncertainty about her medals’ whereabouts, Douglas remains focused on her recovery and training for potential future competitions.
