Furiosa Grosses $58 Million, Garfield Approaches $100 Million

Box Office Update: “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” Struggles Internationally

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” Falters at International Box Office, Struggles to Match Predecessor’s Success

Despite high expectations, the latest installment in the Mad Max series, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” is facing challenges at the international box office. The film, directed by George Miller, has earned $33.3 million from 75 territories in its opening weekend, falling short of expectations given its $168 million production budget.

Internationally, “Furiosa” is in a tight race with Sony’s animated film “The Garfield Movie” for the top spot at the box office. Both films have brought in around $25 million over the weekend and an estimated $31 million through Memorial Day on Monday, marking one of the weakest Memorial Day holiday weekends in recent years.

While “Furiosa” has been well-received by critics and audiences, it is struggling to match the success of its predecessor, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which earned $380 million against a similar budget. The new film, which features Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth in leading roles, has not been able to break out beyond its core fanbase of older male moviegoers.

In terms of international performance, “Furiosa” saw its strongest start in Korea with $4.5 million, followed by France, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Australia. Imax screens accounted for $9.5 million of global box office sales, with $4.7 million coming from international markets.

In comparison, “The Garfield Movie,” which has been slowly rolling out internationally, has already earned $91.1 million worldwide. The film, featuring Chris Pratt as the voice of the iconic cat, was made on a much smaller budget of $60 million and has been performing well in markets like Mexico and Germany.

Overall, “Furiosa” faces stiff competition from other films in the international market, including Disney and 20th Century’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” and Paramount’s “IF.” With a competitive summer movie season ahead, “Furiosa” will need to generate more momentum to match the global success of its predecessors and justify its substantial budget.
