Spain’s Foreign Minister condemns Israeli video amid growing spat over Gaza war
An intense diplomatic feud between Spain and Israel has erupted over the Gaza war, with both countries exchanging harsh words and accusations. The latest development in this ongoing dispute is a controversial video posted by Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, which has sparked outrage in Spain.
The video, titled “Hamas: Gracias España” (“Hamas: Thanks Spain”), features the Spanish flag and a flamenco dance, but also includes footage of Hamas fighters and the aftermath of a recent attack on southern Israel by the militant group. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has described the video as “scandalous and execrable,” denouncing its use of Spanish cultural symbols to promote a divisive message.
The conflict escalated further when Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles and Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz referred to the situation in Gaza as a “genocide,” prompting a strong response from the Israeli embassy in Madrid. Israel has adamantly denied accusations of genocide, asserting that it is acting in self-defense against Hamas.
Tensions between the two countries have been mounting since Spain announced its intention to recognize Palestine as a state on May 28, a decision that Israel views as “a reward for terrorism.” In response, Israel recalled its ambassadors from Spain, Ireland, and Norway.
Spain has defended its recognition of Palestine as a move towards peace and resolution in Gaza, but Israel remains firm in its stance that it is fighting a just war against Hamas. The European Union and the United States both classify Hamas as a terrorist organization.
As the diplomatic row continues to escalate, the two countries are at odds over the root causes and solutions to the conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in significant loss of life and destruction in the region. The international community watches closely as tensions rise between Spain and Israel, calling for restraint and diplomatic dialogue to resolve the crisis.
