First Global Awards Ceremony Commends Spanish Industry, says MPA

Celebrating Spanish Talent at the 2024 MPA Awards

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) recently hosted its first international awards ceremony in Madrid, Spain, honoring key figures in the Spanish entertainment industry. The 2024 MPA Awards, held at the Byne House, recognized individuals who have made significant contributions to the creativity, policy, and law enforcement within the audiovisual sector.

One of the notable recipients of the evening was acclaimed filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona, who received the MPA Creator Award for his outstanding career in filmmaking. Known for his work on films such as “The Orphanage,” “The Impossible,” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” Bayona expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing his dedication to creating impactful films that make a difference in the world.

Additionally, Nadia Calviño, former First Vice President of Spain and current president of the European Investment Bank Group, was honored with the MPA Industry Champion Award for her instrumental role in developing Spain’s “Audiovisual Hub” initiative. This initiative has significantly increased international production in the country, resulting in a boost of over $200 million in investment and the creation of more than 10,000 jobs.

Furthermore, the Spanish National Police were recognized with the inaugural MPA Creative Protector Award for their ongoing efforts to combat digital piracy. With a specialized IP protection group established in the 1980s and a strong focus on investigating IP crime, the Spanish police have collaborated with the MPA on numerous anti-piracy operations. Francisco Pardo, Director-General of the police force, highlighted the importance of addressing digital piracy as a threat to Spain’s economy and creative community.

The decision to host the MPA Awards in Spain reflects the country’s growing international influence in the entertainment industry and signifies the MPA’s acknowledgment of the increasingly global nature of film and television production. Overall, the event celebrated the innovative and impactful contributions of Spanish professionals in the audiovisual sector.
