International Timpani Intensive at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music: A Musical Immersion for Timpanists from Around the Globe

The Inaugural International Timpani Intensive Draws Timpanists from Around the Globe

For five days in early June, timpanists from around the world gathered at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music for the inaugural International Timpani Intensive (ITI). The event brought together a diverse group of musicians for a deep dive into the art of timpani playing.

Led by renowned timpanists such as Leonardo Soto, Joseph Pereira, Nick Woud, and Jeff Luft, the ITI featured a comprehensive curriculum including master classes, private lessons, and a mock audition. The winner of the audition even earned a spot on the Houston Symphony sublist and a guaranteed performance with the orchestra.

Participants, both in-person and virtual, praised the inclusivity of the event, which aimed to provide high-level timpani education to all who were interested, regardless of location or resources. The sense of community fostered at the ITI was a highlight for many attendees, who found inspiration in the varied approaches and backgrounds of their fellow timpanists.

Organizers have already hinted at a return for a second year, citing the strong bonds formed among participants and a shared passion for the instrument. As one attendee put it, the event was not just a learning experience, but a chance to make lifelong connections and friendships.
