Airlines Struggle to Restore Operations After Faulty Software Update Causes Worldwide Havoc
The airline industry is facing major disruptions as airlines, including Delta Air Lines, struggle to recover from a faulty software update that caused chaos worldwide. Total cancellations on Sunday reached 1,461, with Delta and United Airlines being the hardest hit.
Delta’s CEO, Ed Bastian, apologized to customers as the airline worked to restore its systems and operations. More than 3,500 flights were canceled due to the technical issue, with crew tracking tools being among the affected systems. The timing of the outage couldn’t have been worse, occurring during one of the busiest travel weekends of the summer.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has been in contact with Delta’s leadership, emphasizing the airline’s obligation to provide refunds to affected passengers. He stressed the importance of prompt refunds, free rebooking, and adequate customer service for those impacted by the disruptions.
Passengers are urged to stay informed and seek assistance if needed during this challenging time for the airline industry. Buttigieg reassured travelers that the Department of Transportation is committed to enforcing passenger protections to ensure they are not left stranded or waiting endlessly for assistance.
