Celebrating 100 Years of Gaelic Competitions: Queen’s University Teams Head to the US
Queen’s University Gaelic Teams Set to Make Historic Trip to US East Coast to Celebrate 100 Year Anniversary
As Queen’s University Gaelic teams gear up for a groundbreaking journey to the east coast of the US this summer, star player Anton Tohill is reflecting on the significance of the upcoming trip, which marks the 100 year anniversary of competing in inter-varsity Gaelic Football competitions.
In an interview with Irishstar.com, Tohill expressed his pride in representing Irish culture and the university on an international stage. He highlighted the evolution of Queen’s University as a platform for showcasing Irish culture at the highest level, despite not being originally established to have an Irish sports team.
At just 24 years old, Tohill has already made a name for himself in the world of sports, following in his father’s footsteps as a former Derry footballer. After playing Australian Rules in various clubs, he returned home to pursue Gaelic football and his studies in medicine at Queen’s University.
Despite his success in sports, Tohill remains steadfast in his dream of becoming a doctor, stating that it has always been more important to him than being a footballer. He credits the university for allowing him to excel in both fields and balance his passions.
As the teams prepare to travel to New York and Boston, Tohill reflects on the power of Gaelic sports in connecting individuals to their Irish roots, especially in foreign lands like Australia where he previously played Australian Rules. The teams will engage in community coaching sessions and celebrate the cultural exchange with their partner university, Northeastern.
Tohill and his teammates are excited to showcase their skills and bring excitement to the Irish community in New York and Boston through competitive matches with local teams. The trip promises incredible networking opportunities and celebrations of the university’s centenary in inter-varsity Gaelic competitions.
With determination and a mix of sportsmanship and cultural pride, the Gaelic teams from Queen’s University are set to make a memorable impact on the east coast this summer, entertaining the Irish diaspora in the US with their exceptional talent and passion for Gaelic sports.
