Queens University Gaelic Football Teams to Commemorate 100-Year Anniversary with US Tour
As Gaelic teams at Queen’s University prepare to embark on a historic trip to the east coast of the US this summer, student and footballer Anton Tohill is reflecting on the significance of the upcoming journey, which marks the 100 year anniversary of competing in inter-varsity Gaelic Football competitions.
Tohill, speaking to Irishstar.com, expressed his pride in representing Irish culture and the university on an international stage. He emphasized how Queen’s University was not initially established to have an Irish sports team but has now evolved into a platform for showcasing Irish culture at the highest level.
At 24 years old, Tohill has already made a name for himself in the world of sports. Following in his father’s footsteps as a former Derry footballer, he ventured into Australian Rules, playing for various clubs before ultimately deciding to return home to pursue Gaelic football and his studies in medicine at Queen’s University.
Despite his successful sporting career, Tohill remains committed to his dream of becoming a doctor, stating, “I always wanted to be a doctor, that was always more important to me than being a footballer.” He credits the university for allowing him to balance both passions and excel in both fields.
As the teams prepare to travel to New York and Boston, Tohill reflects on the power of Gaelic sports in connecting individuals to their Irish roots, particularly in foreign lands like Australia where he spent time playing Australian Rules. During their US tour, the teams will engage in community coaching sessions and celebrate the cultural exchange with their partner university, Northeastern.
Tohill and his teammates are eager to showcase their skills and bring excitement to the Irish community in New York and Boston through competitive matches with local teams. Their trip promises incredible networking opportunities and celebrations of the university’s centenary in inter-varsity Gaelic competitions.
As they gear up for the games ahead, Tohill expressed the team’s determination to perform at their best and entertain the Irish diaspora in the US. With a mix of sportsmanship and cultural pride, the Gaelic teams from Queen’s University are set to make a memorable impact on the east coast this summer.
