Airlines forced to ground flights due to Microsoft cloud outage

Global Tech Update Failure Causes Chaos Across the World

The world was thrown into chaos early Friday as a failed tech update wreaked havoc on flights, banks, and media outlets worldwide. Travelers at busy airports like JFK and LaGuardia found themselves stranded, unable to board their flights due to the unprecedented internet disruption.

The root cause of the global crisis was traced back to a faulty software update deployed by cybersecurity company CrowdStrike to computers running Microsoft Windows overnight. While Microsoft managed to fix the underlying issue, the impact of the cybersecurity outages continued to affect some Office 365 apps and services.

Major US airline carriers, including Frontier, American, Delta, and United, were among those impacted by the cloud outages caused by Microsoft. Flight cancellations and delays were reported at airports around the globe, including at Gatwick Airport in the UK.

The ripple effects of the technological disruption were felt far and wide, with news outlets in Australia going off air, hospitals and doctor’s offices in the UK experiencing appointment system problems, and banks and financial services companies from New Zealand to India facing disruptions.

Despite the chaos, New York City’s chief technology officer reassured the public that critical systems like emergency services were not impacted by the outage. While the situation was eventually resolved, the incident served as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities of our increasingly interconnected world.
