“Ninth Air Force Hosts Data-Centric Hack-a-thon at Shaw Air Force Base”
The Command Technology Data Office (CTDO) at Ninth Air Force (Air Forces Central) hosted a revolutionary Hack-a-thon at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, bringing together a diverse group of participants to tackle complex operational challenges. The event, which took place from April 29 to May 3, 2024, aimed to develop innovative solutions for command and control issues relevant to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility.
With 23 participants, including Airmen and partners from academia and industry, such as George Mason University and Booz Allen Hamilton, the Hack-a-thon focused on four strategic areas: Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (CUAS), aircraft movements, Global Force Management (GFM), and optimization of streaming command and control data. Participants were judged on their ability to assess problem sets, collect data, and develop project management plans for implementing solutions.
Master Sgt. Darren Heller, CTDO superintendent, highlighted the importance of the event in fostering innovation and problem-solving within the command. The Hack-a-thon not only demonstrated the collective expertise of the participants but also showcased AFCENT’s commitment to enhancing operational effectiveness and decision-making processes.
The event aligns with Lt. Gen. France’s vision for the command and supports AFCENT’s mission to deliver dominant combat power and integrated command and control in collaboration with partners in the region. Chief Master Sgt. Katherine Grabham emphasized the importance of continuously improving processes, integrating all-domain effects into the battlespace, and rapidly sharing information internally and with partners.
The Hack-a-thon not only advanced AFCENT’s data and digitalization transformation efforts but also emphasized the importance of data literacy and innovation. The CTDO’s dedication to shaping the command into a data-driven headquarters and the resources available for tackling real-world challenges were highlighted during the event.
Overall, the Hack-a-thon at Shaw Air Force Base was a significant step towards modernizing the joint force and fostering collaboration between Airmen, academia partners, and industry collaborators. The CTDO’s commitment to innovation and problem-solving in a data-centric environment will undoubtedly benefit AFCENT and its mission in the future.
