ABS and USCG-RDC Sign MoU for Collaborative Research on Maritime Technologies

ABS and USCG-RDC Join Forces for Maritime Industry Innovation

In a move towards advancing technology and safety in the maritime industry, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the United States Coast Guard Research and Development Center (USCG-RDC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on groundbreaking research and development.

This partnership will focus on key areas such as remote and autonomous systems for uncrewed surface and underwater vehicles, advanced data analytics incorporating artificial intelligence and machine learning for maritime assets, and cybersecurity for vessels. Additionally, the MoU will cover topics including ports and transportation infrastructure, analysis of changing risks in the marine transportation system, and the impacts of energy transition and alternative fuels in the maritime domain.

ABS Senior Vice President for Global Government, Bruce Baffer, emphasized the importance of sharing best practices and advancements in the rapidly evolving maritime industry. He stated, “Signing this MoU formalizes our collaboration with the USCG-RDC and brings ABS’ global perspective and a joint framework to further maritime innovation on a range of technical and safety topics.”

Captain Michael P. Chien, Commanding Officer of the USCG-RDC, also expressed excitement about the partnership, noting ABS’ exceptional reputation as an internationally recognized maritime class society. He believes that the expertise and research conducted by ABS will complement the efforts of the USCG-RDC and expand their ability to support the Coast Guard at various levels.

This collaboration between ABS and USCG-RDC marks a significant milestone in advancing research and development within the maritime industry. Both organizations are eager to embark on joint projects that will drive innovation and enhance safety in maritime operations.
