Latest Census Data Shows Shift in Largest U.S. Cities

The latest Census Bureau data has revealed some interesting shifts in the list of the 15 largest cities in the United States. In a recent report released by the Bureau, it was highlighted that two cities, one in Texas and one in Florida, have climbed up the ranks to secure a position among the most populous urban centers in the country.

The data, which was released on Thursday, shows that New York City remains at the top spot with a population of almost 8.3 million as of July 1, 2023. Following closely behind are Los Angeles with nearly 4 million residents and Chicago with 2.7 million. However, the new entrants to the top 15 list are Jacksonville, Florida, with a population of 986,000 and Fort Worth, Texas, with a population of 978,000, pushing out Austin, Texas, and San Jose, California from their previous positions.

Texas has seen a significant population increase of almost 475,000 from July 2022 to July 2023, making it the state with the largest growth in the country. With an estimated population of 30,503,301 as of July 1, 2023, Texas is only second to California, which has just under 39 million residents. Fort Worth gained 21,365 people during this period, while Austin saw a population increase of 4,464.

The report also highlighted that the South continues to experience the largest and fastest population growth, with thirteen of the 15 fastest-growing cities in the region. Eight of these cities are in Texas, showcasing the state’s rapid urbanization and development.

The data provides valuable insights into the changing demographics and urban landscapes of the United States, shedding light on the shifting population trends across different regions.
