Global Cyber Outage Leads to 1,200 Flight Cancellations in U.S.
A global cyber outage has wreaked havoc on the airline industry, with more than 1,200 flights canceled in the U.S. on Sunday. The top carriers affected were Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, as they continue to grapple with the fallout of the tech issue that forced flights to be grounded on Friday.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian stated that the airline is still working to restore operations following the technology problem, resulting in over 3,500 Delta and Delta Connection flights being canceled through Saturday. To assist in the recovery process, Delta is offering extra pay to its crews to staff flights.
United Airlines, on the other hand, mentioned that most of its technology systems have been restored, but customers can still expect cancellations and delays over the weekend. The airlines have extended travel waivers for affected passengers.
The root cause of the systems problems has been attributed to a software update by cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, affecting not just airlines but also other industries like healthcare and banking. The impact of the cyber outage underscores the critical importance of cybersecurity in today’s interconnected world.
