Unforgettable Star-Spangled Banner Performances: Fergie, Beyonce and More

Memorable Versions of The Star-Spangled Banner

The United States national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” is known to be a challenging song to perform, with some celebrities delivering unforgettable renditions while others fall short. In July 2024, country star Ingrid Andress made headlines for her unique performance of the anthem at the MLB Home Run Derby in Texas. Admitting to being drunk during the performance, Andress received mixed reviews, with some baseball players even struggling to hold back laughter.

On the flip side, Whitney Houston’s rendition at Super Bowl XXV in 1991 remains a standout moment. Her powerful delivery of the anthem was so iconic that it was released as a charity single to support soldiers and their families during the Gulf War.

Other memorable performances include CODA star Troy Kotsur’s inspiring American Sign Language interpretation at Super Bowl LVII, Lady Gaga’s patriotic inauguration performance for President Joe Biden, Fergie’s infamous rendition at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, Beyoncé’s showstopping inauguration performance for President Barack Obama, and Jimi Hendrix’s legendary rendition at Woodstock in 1969.

However, not all renditions were well-received. Comedian Roseanne Barr faced backlash for her rendition at a San Diego Padres game in 1990, with former President George H.W. Bush calling it “disgraceful.” Barr later explained that she had intended to sing well but started off on the wrong note.

Despite the range of performances, each rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” contributes to the tapestry of American musical history, evoking emotions of pride, patriotism, and sometimes unexpected surprises.
