Kaspersky Labs Exiting US Market Due to Biden Administration’s Cybersecurity Ban
Kaspersky Labs, a Russia-based antivirus software company, has made the decision to exit the US market by July 20. This move comes in response to the Biden administration’s cybersecurity ban, which cited security risks associated with Kaspersky’s software.
The announcement will lead to the elimination of all US-based positions at Kaspersky, affecting fewer than 50 employees in the country. US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo highlighted concerns about Russian exploitation of companies like Kaspersky to collect and weaponize personal information, leading to the ban on sales of the antivirus software.
In addition to the ban, the US government imposed sanctions on Kaspersky’s senior leadership in June, including the chief business development officer, chief operating officer, legal officer, and corporate communications chief, due to cybersecurity risks.
Kaspersky, on the other hand, denies posing any threats to US national security and intends to pursue legal options to preserve its operations and relationships in the country. The company emphasizes transparency, cooperation, and its track record of protecting over a billion devices from cyber threats. Kaspersky also highlights its 11-percent growth in sales bookings in 2023.
This decision will impact consumers who rely on Kaspersky’s anti-malware technology, as they will need to find alternative protection. Kaspersky remains committed to defending against actions that harm its reputation and commercial interests, despite its exit from the US market.
