Saudi Arabia to host Olympic Esports Games, announces IOC

IOC Announces Plans for Olympic Esports Games with Focus on Women’s Participation

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced plans to introduce the Olympic Esports Games, a groundbreaking event that will showcase the world of esports on the global stage. This decision comes as a result of the growing trends of female participation in esports, with Princess Reema Bandar Al-Saud, an IOC Member, playing a crucial role in advocating for women’s empowerment in sport.

Princess Reema Bandar Al-Saud, who is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Saudi Arabian Olympic and Paralympic Committee, expressed her excitement about the increasing female presence in esports. She highlighted the positive impact of sport on women and girls and emphasized the importance of creating a safe and inclusive space for female participation in esports.

The President of the IOC, Thomas Bach, praised the Women’s Committee led by Princess Reema for their efforts in promoting women’s sport in Saudi Arabia. He noted that their support for advancing female participation in esports is a valuable commitment and expressed his anticipation for future cooperation in this new venture.

With plans underway to select a city and venue for the inaugural Olympic Esports Games, the IOC will work on determining the event’s timing, the titles to be included, the qualification process for players, and other relevant details. The IOC has indicated that International Federations and National Olympic Committees already involved in esports will be key partners in the planning and execution of the event.

To address the unique nature of the Olympic Esports Games, the IOC will establish a new dedicated structure within the organization, separate from the existing model for the Olympic Games. This different approach will extend to the financing and organization of the event, ensuring that it receives the necessary resources and attention to thrive on the world stage. Stay tuned for more updates as the IOC continues to develop this exciting new chapter in the world of sports.
