Tornado Watch issued for 5 states in Northeast

A Tornado Watch has been issued for more than 8 million people in parts of New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine as a strong cold front moves through the region. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has highlighted an area in the Northeast with a Level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather, including the potential for large hail, damaging wind gusts, and tornadoes.

Cities such as Albany, Springfield, Worcester, and Manchester are among those at risk for severe weather, with the tornado threat in central and northern New England the highest it’s been in about six years. Historically, Maine and Massachusetts only see about two tornadoes each year, making tornadoes infrequent in the area.

Residents are encouraged to have ways to receive important weather alerts, such as the free FOX Weather app, as outdoor warning sirens are not common in tornado-prone areas like New England. Major cities like New York and Philadelphia are also at risk for damaging wind gusts as the cold front moves through, with temperatures expected to drop by about 10-20 degrees on Monday before climbing back to average or higher by midweek.

The relief from the recent heat wave will be brief, but it is important for residents in the affected areas to stay informed and prepared for severe weather conditions.
