WayForward’s Creative Vision Transformed by Nintendo Partnership, Reveals Game Director

In a revealing session at the Indie World presentation, WayForward Technologies showcased “Yars Rising,” a fresh take on the classic Atari series, reimagined as a Metroidvania. The project’s director, James Montagna, credits his recent collaboration with Nintendo on “Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp” as a pivotal influence on his approach to game design.

James Montagna, a seasoned game designer at WayForward, expressed a renewed perspective on crafting video games following his partnership with industry giant Nintendo. This collaboration, which birthed the remastered versions of “Advance Wars 1+2” last year, provided Montagna with unparalleled insights into innovative game development.

Describing his transformative experience, Montagna said, “It’s like seeing a color that doesn’t exist. I couldn’t have imagined it before. But once you’ve been touched by that and you see that, it’s like, you just can’t see it another way.” This metaphor highlights the profound impact that Nintendo’s creative processes have had on him, reshaping his creative outlook entirely.

The admiration for Nintendo isn’t new among game developers; many have grown up venerating Nintendo’s iconic creations and creators like Shigeru Miyamoto. Similar sentiments were echoed by MercurySteam, the developers behind “Metroid Dread,” who last year described their collaboration with Nintendo as a “game-changing experience.”

“Yars Rising” is set to debut on the Nintendo Switch eShop later this year, offering fans a nostalgic yet novel gaming experience. Meanwhile, gamers can currently enjoy “Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp,” available for purchase, showcasing the fruitful collaboration that has so significantly influenced Montagna’s design philosophy.
