The Inner Demons that Led to Rory McIlroy’s Collapse at the US Open: Insights from a Sports Psychologist

Rory McIlroy’s Mental State Analyzed by Sports Psychologist after US Open Missed Putts

The Mental Game: Rory McIlroy’s Missed Putts at the US Open

Rory McIlroy’s heartbreaking second-place finish at the US Open last week has left fans and experts alike wondering what went wrong for the Northern Irishman on those crucial putts. Sports psychologist and golf performance coach Jon Adler believes that McIlroy’s mental state may have been a key factor in his downfall.

Analyzing McIlroy’s stumble on The Sports Agents podcast, Adler pointed out that the pressure of being so close to his first major win in a decade may have played a role in the golfer’s missed opportunities. McIlroy, 35, was leading the tournament by two strokes with just five holes to go, but crucial misses on short putts on the 16th and 18th greens allowed Bryson DeChambeau to clinch the title.

According to Adler, the inner dialogue that McIlroy may have been experiencing during those critical moments could have contributed to his anxiety and ultimately led to his missed putts. “Rory would have thought ‘I can’t miss this, you better not miss this’, that little voice in your head, that’s not the problem,” Adler explained. “It’s about accepting that I’m going to be anxious, accepting the thoughts when they come in but you deciding actually I’m not going to react to my worrying mind.”

Jon Rahm, the 2023 Masters champion, also weighed in on McIlroy’s putting difficulties, emphasizing the challenging nature of the Pinehurst course. “I think it was Smylie [Kaufman] who said it, he severely underplayed how difficult Rory’s putt on 18 was,” Rahm stated. “When he said it’s a left-center putt, if you hit that putt left-center and miss the hole, you’re off the green because of how much slope there is.”

Despite the disappointment of his US Open performance, McIlroy chose not to compete in the Travelers Championship this week. As fans and experts continue to dissect his missed putts, it remains to be seen how McIlroy will bounce back from this setback in future tournaments.
