Opening of New U.S. 127 Bridge Marks End of an Era and Beginning of a New Chapter in Sherwood

A new chapter in transportation history was written on Friday as the new bridge on U.S. 127 over the Maumee River was officially opened to traffic. The former bridge, dating back to 1946, has been replaced with a modern structure that not only improves safety but also provides access to nature.

The ribbon cutting ceremony, organized by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) in collaboration with Defiance County Economic Development and Paulding County Economic Development, Inc., marked a significant milestone in the region’s highway infrastructure.

One of the key highlights of the project is the addition of a canoe and kayak launch on the southeast side of the bridge. This new public river access was made possible through a partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), creating opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to explore the Maumee River.

John and Ted Walk, lifelong residents of the area whose family homestead dates back to 1850, were honored during the ceremony for their close connection to the bridge. As the first to cross the new structure, they shared nostalgic memories of the former bridge, with John recalling riding his bicycle on the stone as an eight-year-old.

While the new bridge is now open to traffic, work will continue to complete final touches such as sealing concrete, seeding, and tree planting. Miller Brothers Construction of Archbold, the general contractor for the $6.4 million project, will ensure minimal impact on traffic during the remaining construction phase.

The former bridge, a five-span welded steel plate girder structure, has been replaced by a more efficient three-span design with longer spans. The transformation of this vital piece of infrastructure signifies Ohio’s commitment to providing a safe and well-positioned transportation system for the future.

With the successful completion of the new U.S. 127 bridge, the community looks forward to continued opportunities for growth and development in the region.
