SuperBook Sports becomes the latest casualty in the growing list of US sports betting industry casualties

SuperBook Sports Withdraws from Online Sports Betting Markets Outside of Nevada: Implications and Challenges Ahead

SuperBook Sports Exits Online Sports Betting Business in Eight States

In a surprising move, SuperBook Sports, a prominent sports wagering unit of Westgate Resorts, has announced its decision to withdraw from the online sports betting business in eight states outside of Nevada. Effective July 19, 2024, bettors in Colorado, New Jersey, Arizona, Tennessee, Ohio, Iowa, Maryland, and Virginia will no longer have access to SuperBook’s mobile wagering accounts.

The gaming company has urged bettors in these states to withdraw their funds promptly, as SuperBook Sports will no longer accept wagers, deposits, or new accounts in those regions. While the SuperBook Nevada mobile betting app and the SuperBook sportsbook at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino will continue operations, the future of the SuperBook retail location at The Lodge Casino in Colorado remains uncertain.

This decision by SuperBook Sports mirrors a trend seen among other online sportsbook operators, such as Super Group, the parent company of Betway, who have also opted to exit the US market. The intense competition within the sports wagering industry, primarily dominated by major players like DraftKings and FanDuel, has posed challenges for smaller operators to compete effectively.

Despite SuperBook Sports’ strong brand recognition and reputation in Las Vegas, the company has faced difficulties expanding its presence beyond Nevada. Even popular events hosted at the Westgate SuperBook, like the SuperContest and SuperContest Gold, were unable to propel the company to the level of industry giants.

The departure of SuperBook Sports from the online sports betting market highlights the obstacles encountered by smaller operators in a fiercely competitive and evolving industry. As the sports wagering landscape continues to evolve, it is likely that more companies will evaluate their presence in various states to stay competitive and navigate the challenging market conditions.
