A 25-year-old soccer player has died after collapsing during a preseason match in his home country of Portugal, leaving his club and the wider football community mourning a sudden tragedy.
Quévin Castro collapsed Saturday, Aug. 22, during a preseason match between Real Sport Clube and Estrela de Amadora at Estádio das Seixas in Malveira, according to ESPN and the Associated Press. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
“Quevin Castro was far more than a player, he was a member of our family, leaving a mark on all those who had the privilege of knowing him, both on and off the pitch,” Real Sport Clube said in a social media post, according to the outlets.
The Lisbon Football Association also expressed its condolences, saying, “To the family, friends, and the affiliated club [Real Sport Clube], we extend our deepest condolences during this tragic time for Portuguese football.”
Castro began his professional career with English club West Bromwich Albion in 2021. He later had loan spells with Burton, Notts County and Gateshead before joining York in 2023, where he made 15 appearances. He eventually returned to Portugal.
West Bromwich remembered Castro as a player who joined the club as a teenager and made his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup match against Arsenal. The club said he later made his league debut in February 2022 before his loan spells and departure from The Hawthorns in summer 2023.
West Bromwich said its players will honor Castro during Sunday’s match against Burnley on Aug. 23. A period of applause will take place in the 25th minute, and players will wear black armbands.
“The thoughts of everyone at Albion are with Quevin’s loved ones at this desperately sad time,” the club wrote on social media.
The preseason match itself was postponed following the incident. Estrela da Amadora expressed its “deepest sorrow” over Castro’s death and extended condolences to his family, friends and everyone at Real Sport Clube.
“Our thoughts are with all those close to him. Rest in peace, Quevin,” the club said.
