Shake Shack Announces Free Chicken Sandwiches Every Sunday in April and Seemingly Shades Chick-fil-A

Shake Shack is serving up some freebies with a side of sass.

The fast food chain announced that it is handing out free fried chicken sandwiches every Sunday in April.

Fans can score the Chicken Shack (Shake Shack’s chicken sandwich) for free on April 7, 14, 21 and 28. To grab the promo, customers must place a $10 minimum order on an in-store kiosk, the Shake Shack app or the restaurant’s website. Entering the code CHICKENSUNDAY will earn one free sandwich per order.

A press release for the deal read how Shake Shack is “one-upping a famously ‘closed on Sundays’ chicken sandwich fast-food chain, which shall remain unnamed.” While the post doesn’t spell out the connection, all Chick-fil-A locations are closed on Sundays.

Plus, Shake Shack’s website adds that the chicken used in its chicken sandwiches is antibiotic-free, “something not everyone can say these days.” The antibiotic comment seems to be a nod to Chick-fil-A’s recent announcement that it will start allowing some antibiotics in its chicken starting this spring.

In 2014, Chick-fil-A announced that it would only sell chicken that hadn’t been exposed to antibiotics within five years, per USA TODAY. But in March, the chicken sandwich chain revealed that it would be switching from its “no antibiotics ever” pledge to a process called “no antibiotics important to human medicine,” or (NAIHM).

The change comes after the fast food chain was experiencing problems acquiring enough antibiotic-free chicken to meet demands.

“As we looked to the future, the availability of high-quality chicken that meets our rigid standards became a concern,” a spokesperson for Chick-fil-A told PEOPLE. “This change enables us to not only ensure we can continue to serve high-quality chicken, but also chicken that still meets the expectations our customers count on us to deliver.”
