Hamas Withdraws from Gaza Ceasefire Talks Amid Israeli “Massacres”

A senior Hamas official announced on Sunday that the Palestinian militant group has pulled out of negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza war. The decision was made in response to what Hamas referred to as Israeli “massacres” and the aggressor’s attitude during the talks.

The withdrawal comes after Israel’s massive bomb attack on a southern Gaza camp, reportedly targeting the wanted Hamas commander, which left 92 people dead. Despite the attack, Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif is said to be “fine” and continuing his work.

Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh informed international mediators from Qatar and Egypt about the end of ceasefire discussions. The proposed agreement, initially outlined by US President Joe Biden in May, aimed to initiate a six-week ceasefire and facilitate the exchange of hostages taken during Hamas’s previous attack on Israel.

Haniyeh expressed Hamas’s frustration with Israel’s lack of seriousness and continued acts of violence against civilians. He stated that Hamas had shown flexibility in the negotiations and was willing to resume talks once Israel demonstrated a genuine interest in reaching a ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal.

In a statement, Haniyeh urged mediators and other countries to pressure Israel to cease its attacks. Despite Israel’s claims that Deif was the target of recent strikes, Hamas asserts that he is alive and actively overseeing operations for the group’s armed wing.

The conflict between Hamas and Israel has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely as tensions escalate in the region.
